The Watch: Comedy at its worst

by Jen Gore

With a cast including Ben Stiller,Vince Vaughn,Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade, and a great red band trailer, we were all set to sit down for some comedy gold, even brought some thread in case our sides split. Well, we were incredibly wrong.

The Watch is a (loosely labeled) sci-fi comedy about a group of men who get together to find who murdered a fellow Cost Co. employee, only to discover that aliens are walking around as humans. They set out to defeat the alien life forms but get more than they bargained for.

The Watch has not received positive reviews and rightly so. The plot is pretty solid and could have been a very good serious comedy or even a much better comedy considering the talent of the cast. But whoever the hell was in charge (and we assume it was a 16-year-old boy) decided to go with humor that basically revolved around dick jokes, sex jokes, jizz jokes and more sex jokes. I’m sure if I was a teenage boy attending the film with a group of my mates I’d have a laugh but being a 20 year old woman, it barely got a smile from me.

The Watch was pretty boring and the acting was exactly what you expect from Ben Stiller,Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill. They play the same characters they always play but with the addition of Richard Ayoade who we know and love from The I.T Crowd, where he starred alongside Chris O’Dowd or Dark Place or even Man to Man, I was disappointed to see they completely utilized his comedic talent in the wrong way & made him uncomfortably crude. It’s a bad start for Ayoade’s Hollywood debut. He should maybe stick to directing and English comedy.

The best thing about The Watch was its red band trailer, taking its best bits, so save your money and just watch this trailer instead.
