Mark Zusak’s hugely successful book (more than 280 weeks on top of the best seller’s list) will come to the big screen with Geoffrey Rush,Emily Watson and French-Canadian newcomer Sophie Nelisse. For those of you who haven’t read ‘The Book Thief’, it’s set in Nazi Germany where a young girl called Liesel is taken in by foster parents (played by Rush and Watson). The foster parents take in a Jewish refugee (played by Ben Schnetzer) and keep him hidden but among the terrible tragedies that unfold because of the war and the burning of books, Liesel manages to steal a few for herself and is taught how to read by her foster father. ‘The Book Thief’ is a fantastic book and should make for an even better film, if done right it could be Oscar worthy and it’s being directed by Downton Abbey’s Brian Percival. Production is scheduled to start this month in Berlin.
