Why women’s roles in movies being played by men is so ridiculous

BuzzFeed have created a great video showing men in the positions women usually play in films. Generally women are used in movies as props, objects, for sex and mostly to ‘look pretty’ or ‘to look hot’ while the male is taken more seriously, more masculine, powerful and made not to look so fucking stupid.

buzzfeed womens roles in movies played by menIn the video, when the roles are flipped, it’s hilarious to see male actors act the exact same way women are told to. Why is it so funny and awkward to watch? Because unfortunately we’re all used to this and how both women and men should act. Men can’t be the feminine, shy, emotional ones and women certainly can’t be the strong, powerful ones.

Recently I read Caitlin Moran’s ‘How To Be A Woman’ which is a fantastic and funny read that illustrate feminism. But here is one of the book’s quotes we can apply to everything:

“You can tell whether some misogynistic societal pressure is being exerted on women by calmly enquiring, ‘And are the men doing this, as well?’ If they aren’t, chances are you’re dealing with what we strident feminists refer to as ‘some total fucking bullshit’.”

That is the case here, men do not act like women in films because it is ‘some total fucking bullshit’ and frankly I think most of us are all a little sick of seeing women in their damsel in distress roles and their ‘I’m only here to be saved, seduce people and look sexy while I’m doing it’ roles too.

Take a look at the video for yourselves and ask yourselves ‘Is seeing men and women like this uncomfortable? Why?’
